Plan approved for Bronx Road- October 4, 1956

U.S is going to pay 90%
Road to be 4.7 miles long
the boulevard will be up to expressway standards from Bronx River North to new England
first section of the Bruckner Expressway was authorized by the city two years ago.
senior village approved also- $6,400,000

1/5 of the apartments are for people 60 years of age or older
large scale developments brings change in the zone
Robert Moses requested The Federal Housing and Home Finance to be applied to an urban renewal project in Cadman Plaza ,Brooklyn.
The project would provide from 500 to 700 apartments and cost about $60,00,000 IS THIS PROJECT IN THE BRONX OR IN BROOKLYN?
Questions for Plan Approved Bronx Road- October 4, 1956
Who will pay the other 10% for Bronx Road
Was the Bruckner expressway existing when the Bronx Road plan was approved?
why are there separate apartments for people over 60?
Does senior village mean village of seniors only?
What is Federal Housing and Home Finance?
Who is Bruckner?
When was construction for the Bruckner Expessway built?
A Needed Artery-October 8, 1956
An expressway is needed from the Triborough Bridge northward to the east Bronx to the New England Thruway
Progress of the first section of the expressway has been very slow
ever since two years ago when the plan was approved there has only been building destruction and tenant relocation
Real construction of first section is supposed to begin next year(1957)
The first section is a $30,800,000 two mile elevated highway going from triborough bridge to the Bronx River
first projected in 1851 and was almost defeated because of local bickering
New England thruway was done in 1958- there was already heavy traffic
Another expressway link was needed to let the traffic be tolerable
New expressway section was approved and will be built under the wast federal highway aid program
Question for the Needed artery
Why was the Bruckner expressway needed?
Why did they refer to the expressway as a needed artery?
What delayed the construction of the first section?
Where buildings destroyed to make room for the expressway?
What did the people say about the expressway that delayed it?
Who are the people who used the Bruckner Expressway?
Bronx Detours Slated-January 24, 1958
plans to re channel traffic were announced by police officer
Meanwhile an elevated expressway was being worked on over Bruckner Boulevard
Traffic will be now between 140th street and long wood avenue
Motorist will find out by posted signs
Northbound Center and service roadways will be closed at 140th street
All traffic will go to the Southbound center roadway.
Vehicle traffic in the Southbound will be changed to the Southbound service road at Long wood avenue
Commercial traffic will be moved one block west
traffic will be at southern boulevard and then southward again
Questions for Bronx Detours Slated
Why was traffic being re channeled?
why does this construction affect the Northbound Section?
Why is all traffic going south and where does it all lead to?
Are people angry thought thatat they will be rerouting?
Will they make use of the new expressway and think it is worth it or not?
Why are passenger and commercial traffic being directed to different locations?
What part of Southern Boulevard will it reach?
was all of this re-directing really necessary?
Bronx Foreseen As New City Hub- January 25, 1959
Bronx is New York's only borough on mainland in the u.s
This was described by a specialist in construction
Irving J. Feder thought that with all the Highways, rail networks and substantial water frontage it was a logical place for expansion of city concerns
He is head of construction at 292 Madison Avenue
bronx has five railroads
Southern terminus of the New England and New York State Thruways have access to the other boroughs and Long Island
They are accessible by bridges including the proposed Throgg's Neck Bridge
In the Bronx there a efficient roads that are able to with stand commercial traffic

Highways through the Bronx
The construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway was very persistent during the early 1960's
Some sections of the Cross Bronx were abover ground level and allowed people to walk underneath it
Other areas were below grounlevel and people walked on overpasses
The highway was also on groundlevel seperating he neighborhood in half
At the eastern end of the Cross Bron, Robert Moses built the Throgs Neck Bridge to connect with the eastern part of Queens
In painting directional signs, Robert put only one "g" in Throgs to save money
The connection opened in1961
At the western end of the Cross Bronx Robert built a new bridge that spanned the Harlem river
He did this instead of using the Washington Bridge which was is original plan of the 1920's
He thought the the old bridge would not be able to handle teh more traffic that the new high way caused
So the Alexander Hamilton Bridge was built to carry the highway into Manhattan and the George Washington Bridge past new Jersey
The alexander Hamilton Bridge opened in 1965
Moses used many of the same construction techniques throughout all of his constructions
he constructed The Bruckner expressway over Bruckner Boulevard
the Cross Bronx and Bruckner Expressway met at Union port
This divided the neighborhood into three parts
North of Pehlam Parkway the Bruckner Expressway became the New England thruway and curved o n the northwestern part of pehlam bay park
this highway encouraged the construction of high rise of apartment buildings and suburban style mall along the soudview route
Final support for this highway was completed in 1963 with the bruckner interchange
there were alot of overpasses near westchester creek
This connected the Bruckner and Cross Bronx expressway with the older Hutchinson River Parkway
people who lived in the Highwasy path were forced to move and buisinesses had to close
The bRonx turned into just a place you passed on your way to your destination
The highways managed remove vehicles and commercial traffic from Bronx local streets
This allowed for parking spaces
Traffic moved at a steady pace
In the highway the traffic did increase though
Sometmes during rush hour traffic slowed down and sometimes stopped
Questions for Highways throught the bronx
Did anyone oppose to the Cross Bronx construction?
Why were some sections above, below, and on groundlevel?
how much money was invested in this construction and did this affect the economy?
Why did Robert not persist the George washington Bridge
Did these highways affect the way that the Bronx looked and the way it changed?
